high-fructose corn syrup

"An estimated 2 million to 5 million Americans have gout, a type of arthritis that causes stiff, swollen and painful joints. It occurs when your uric acid levels build up in your blood, and although gout is commonly blamed on eating too many high-purine foods, such as organ meats and some seafood, there is clearly another dietary culprit: high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

"Fruit juices are also often loaded with fructose, and if you still believe that this is an acceptable form of sugar, think again.

Fructose contains no beneficial enzymes, vitamins,  minerals or accessory micronutrients for you, and actually leeches them from your body. Unbound fructose, found in large quantities in HFCS, can interfere with your heart's use of vital minerals such as magnesium, copper and chromium.

Fructose also reduces the affinity of insulin for its receptor, which is the principle characteristic of type 2 diabetes. Further, HFCS has been implicated in elevated blood cholesterol levels, and it has been found to inhibit the action of white blood cells in your immune system.

Meanwhile, fructose is not metabolized the same as other sugars. Instead of being converted to glucose, which your body uses, it is removed by your liver. But, because it is metabolized by your liver, fructose does not cause your pancreas to release insulin the way it normally does. So fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar, which may be one of the reasons Americans continue to get fatter."  Dr Mercola

Avoid Sugar without Hating It!
December 15th, 2007
Common sweeteners include sucrose (table sugar), fructose, high-fructose corn syrup, Splenda (sucralose), aspartame, and the natural sweeteners like stevia, agave and erythrotol. All of them have different effects on the body.  While some can contribute to obesity and heart disease, others can prevent them.

Sugar and artificial sweeteners tend to disrupt satiety (causing users to overeat), spike the fat storing hormone insulin and lead to the age accelerating molecules known as AGE products (advanced glycation end products).

Conversely, natural sweeteners are known to help control appetite, keep insulin low, and prevent the formation of AGE products.  Stevia and erythrotol are perfect examples of this.  And, unknown to most, stevia can even lower blood pressure among those who suffer from hypertension.

IF YOU HAVE TO EAT DESSERT: Insulin spiking sugars like sucrose are best consumed after a healthy fat and protein rich meal as to slow its absorption into the bloostream.  This can sometimes prevent the subsequent insulin spike and "sugar crash" that many dessert eaters experience.  An even better alternative is to learn how to "Avoid sugar without hating it" at Wellness Bakeries."

"The best step to avoiding heart disease is to abstain from high-fructose corn syrup. Minimizing daily sugar intake to 10-15 grams can do wonders for warding off a heart attack. Direct sunshine 15-20 minutes daily helps too. It increases insulin sensitivity among diabetics and therefore lowers blood sugar to healthy levels."
